Thankfulness and Mindfulness

March 8, 2018

I am mindful about how I act, and I am thankful for the ability to act.

I am mindful of my privilege, and thankful that I have it.

My parents would move heaven and earth for me; I know this, and appreciate it so much.

My parents are concerned about my weight; I know this, and although I should appreciate it, I need to appreciate it more. There are many whose parents are checked out, or oblivious, or absent, or too busy to notice.

My friends are supportive, and although most don't live close, they are always there for me. I am thankful for them, even when I don't actively acknowledge it. There are many whose friends are not a support system.

I have a flexible, caring boss. I am mindful of this. I am thankful for this.

But there are so many things I take for granted: no curfew, the ability to buy whatever food I want, clean water, white skin, new shoes.

Then there's finances. Mine. My not-yet-sick parents'. And also: not having to struggle with my grandfather's funeral decisions. Deciding what emblem to put on his urn, what charity people should donate to in lieu of flowers, when to have visiting hours, where to eat. File under: Difficult Things I'll Deal With When I'm Older.

I am mindful that my life is easy. Relatively speaking. I am thankful for that.

Okay, I've said my piece. Now, it's your turn.
